Design Change - in the workings

by Robert Whetton 26. October 2010 15:11
In between taking photographs - attending workshops (blog post in the making, just need to find the time to post) - producing wedding albums for other photographers and editing photographs. I'm changing my logo and the way that my main site looks and works, hoping to come off of blogger as well (sorry google), and set up a word press blog on my site instead.

I just need to find some time...

Wedding of Marie and Dave - 1st Oct 2010. Supporting Vikki Poole with her first wedding

by Robert Whetton 7. October 2010 01:39
Last Friday saw me 2nd shooting and supporting Vikki Poole a keen ameteur photographer that I know from when I shoot The Longest Day gigs. She informed me that she was going to be shooting her first wedding, I asked her how much experience of wedding photography she had and got the answer of "None". Alarm bells rang and I knew that I couldn't let her shoot the wedding by herself, and offered my services. She imediately said "Yes Please!".

So I started the ball rolling by giving her a list of things she should be asking the Bride and Groom about the day. The day was looking good, timings etc. Then the thing that all photographers hate, the weather looked grim for the day. It was going to be a wet wedding!
We went ahead and scouted out the venue for the reception. The wedding was held at Poole Guild Hall (they give you 15 minutes after the ceremony to get shots - so that was out of the question on a wet day).

Looking around the venue - Riveira Hotel in Branksome, it wasn't looking great for a large group shot.. 90+ guests, there was only one place outside where that could happen and the weather was gong to have to give us a break to get that shot (we didn't get that break). So small groups it was.
I then looked around for places to shoot the Bride and Groom, several places looked like good spots. Unfortunately I didn't take into acount that being a wet day, cars would be parked all over the place and we never got the chance to shoot any of the locations because of cars..

The big day arrived, I picked up Vikki and we headed to the brides house, my iPhone satnav worked like a charm and we arrived in good time. Entering the house, it was a typical brides morning, chaos ruled. We got there as the bride Marie was having her hair done and the bridesmaids were doing their makeup, and so the photography started.

The Registrar said that the responisiblity of the Marriage Certificate was the brides, but she gave it to Dave to look after as Marie didn't have anywhere to put it. Dave thought of a place!

Time and weather was not on our side. Litterally 5 minutes with Marie and Dave before we had to do the group shots.

I don't think Vikki thought there was as much work involved in shooting a wedding as there actualy is..

Thanks to Vikki for allowing me to help you out, and thank you Marie and Dave for accepting me on the day.

Summer Weddings 2010

by Robert Whetton 4. October 2010 14:19
Crazy times.. I've been wanting to update information on here for a long time, but everytime I try and put a post together something else comes up! I've finally found 10 mintues to put together this post.

Over the Summer I've been out shooting weddings as a 2nd, covering the Grooms morning for Boundless Photos up in Lymington Spa. The first set is from back in August, when Rachel and Jay got married at Wroxall Abbey. Jay and his best man were a pleasure to cover in the morning, plenty of laughs.

This 2nd wedding, when Jo and Gareth tied the knot was on the 18th September, the Church was a mobile black hole around Hook Norton. And then after, the reception was held a really nice golf club in Chipping Norton.

Family Holiday - Cornwall, 7 Days without a Camera

by Robert Whetton 11. August 2010 13:49
Yeah! right and monkeys might fly out of my butt! Are you crazy? put my camera down???

Weather was pants, but then what holiday in the UK doesn't come with its share of overcast and rain.. The kids had a blast and I vaguely got some rest?

Some of the highlights from the holiday.

No holiday in Cornwall is complete without fish and chips down on a quay.

This one legged Gull was quite a character, very aggressive against the other Gulls though.

Day 2 of the holiday was greeted by rain. Luckily there was an indoor play area near by and the kids had a blast with the indoor crazy golf.

Rachels diabetic complications reared their ugly head on Monday, so I took the kids for a walk along the local beach.

What I thought was an unusual butterfly, is actually a Moth. The Six-spot Burnet (Zygaena filipendulae) is a day-flying moth of the family Zygaenidae.

Tuesday day 4 and Rachel is feeling well enough to come out for a trip. Lanhydrock, a National Trust country house in Bodmin.

For Lunch we ended up at Mevagissey a small fishing town. Rachel has fond childhood memories of crab fishing here. So this was our first attempt at crab fishing, we didn't actually catch anything.

Rachel's Dad and his wife came down and stayed at a B+B and we met up with them at The Eden Project. This is such an amazing bit of construction. We first visited 6 years ago. It was still under construction then, so it was good to see it complete.

After the camera and lenses had climatized to the rainforest dome, I took a few photographs. This was part of the Vietnamese area.

It felt so good to get out and have a break in the restaurant before heading into the Mediterranean dome. It has some amazing flowers.

There were so many people, that in order to get a photo of just Rachel I took a photo with people in different positions and then merged them together in Photoshop to remove the people from the photograph.

And some interesting statues. This is one that was explaining that the Romans used to put lead in their wine. There were a whole group of these statues including one of a bull.

Outside was this amazing sculpture made from waste electronics.

We headed up to Newquay on day 5. First stop, Newquay Zoo. A family of Azara's Agouti.

Awww Meercats, aren't they so cute.. Then they show their other side!
After the zoo, we headed into Newquay for some shops - Women! need their retail fix..

After the shopping spree, we headed back to camp and had dinner. Afterwards I took the kids to a little port round the corner - Charlestown for some evening crab fishing.

It didn't take long and Maisy caught her first crab of the holiday. She was very pleased! We caught 3 crabs in total that evening, Maisy 1 Max 2.

On the walk back to the car I got this shot of the port.

Ok so Friday, Day 6 and effectively the last day of the holiday as we needed to vacate our place by 10am on the Saturday. All week I had wanted to go to Adrenalin Quarry and take Britains' longest zip line. The brochure looked really good and with it promising that "Anyone can do The Zip" I didn't even think about checking through the small print for maximum weight limit. After all they'd already said Anyone can do The Zip, that's right Anyone.
It's a fair old trek to get there. Everyone is excited, the kids can't wait, I'm all this is going to be so cool etc. Then when we're just about to fill in the disclaimer forms, the lady behind the desk says, there's a minimum weight limit of 15KG and maximum of 115KG..
I couldn't believe it.. "but I'm about 125KG" I said. "Sorry that's too heavy, but please feel free to step on our scales to check" she said. Balls! 137KG. So that was my holiday treat scuppered.. The nice lady did say that they had this information in the brochure. And there it was plane as day when she pointed it out in small black writing under the address at the back! What a crock! whoever put the brochure and website together - YOU SUCK! how about, where you have NO AGE LIMIT, NO EXCUSES, you have *Weight Limits Apply ?
Summer Holiday 2010 in Cornwall. Photography by Robert Whetton Photographer
So that was that, off to Looe then for some more retail therapy and crab fishing. While sitting eating lunch, these 2 Sea Gulls were having a fight over what looked like a chunk of squid. I wish I'd gotten the camera earlier, one had his bill around the others neck! quite a fight!
This was taken with my 28-75 2.8 and then heavily cropped after (got to love the quality of image from the 28-75 and 50D), I didn't want to be burdened with Lenses when fishing with the kids.

Maisy was very pleased with her haul of crabs. Under her you can see what we used as bait, it was extremely effective vs using the bait of fish from the local shops.
Summer Holiday 2010 in Cornwall. Photography by Robert Whetton Photographer
Bucket of crabs. Success rate was about 80% per throw the net.. Sometimes you'd get a really big one hanging on then just as you pulled the net out of the water, they'd let go.
Summer Holiday 2010 in Cornwall. Photography by Robert Whetton Photographer
An escapee. He made it all the way off the side of the quay into the water (I'm not sure we didnt catch him in the end).
Summer Holiday 2010 in Cornwall. Photography by Robert Whetton Photographer
After coming back from her retail fix, even Rachel caught crabs.
Summer Holiday 2010 in Cornwall. Photography by Robert Whetton Photographer
Nice close up of one of the crabs in the bucket.

So that was our holiday, kids had a blast, and I always have fun with the kids!
